When I download large files AntDM seems to make intense use of my hard drive disk when I click download. Does it preallocates disk space?

#1 often writting?
#2 takes a lot of hd space?

The answer in both cases is yes, but in #1 case, reduce the number of download threads.
#2 If the file size is known in advance, then the hd space is reserved.

Yes, the file size is known, about 5.723 GB

When I get the "Enter Address to Download" dialog and then click "OK" Windows Task Manager reports 3 - 14 MB/s for 1 minute straight and HDD red led constant. Sometimes it gets longer depending on file size of course.

Suggestion: an option to allow AntDM to preallocate or not.

I mean I think preallocation is needed for non-tech users who don't know how much space they got and AntDM wants to be sure it doesn't run out of space, right?

Respect AntDM often writing to disk due to number of threads, I understand and I really don't care. I care about preallocation only.

Disk space is reserved instantly.
A red led indicates an accelerated recording is in progress (your drive is not an SDD). Network speed is faster than your HDD.
Reduce the number of threads or the download speed - this will reduce the load on HDD.
